It wouldn’t fucking hurt GM to make a secondary air infuser that doesn’t fucking break all the god damn time. I went threw this with every one of my Cadillacs. They all have had broken secondary air infusers right at about 100k... well I go to get the fucking Impala inspected and guess what the fuck is broken and not throwing codes. Now i had some idea there was an issue because it’s been noisy on and off during start up, but fuck me. JUst what i wanted, a $500 repair bill right now! well no actually my warranty will cover with only $50 buck deductible.. but fucking hell GM!!! UUUGHH
here’s the next GM my dumb ass is probably gonna buy for your time..

shit it’s actually secondary air injection.. I fucked it up.. but yeah basically. it’s a really pricey ($358 for the part) part only runs at start up I think and breaks a lot.. it’s smog BS..

Even our Catera had issues with the secondary air pump, and it wasn’t even made by GM. Opel chassis, British engine, French transmission. That said the pump itself never failed, but the rubber boots connecting it to the engine rotted out. Fixed those and the plastic regulator looking thing decided to disintegrate. Car sounded like it was powered by Briggs & Straton half of the time, and it never once threw a code for those issues.
(Ended up throwing the regulator looking thing in the trash and replaced it with a T fitting from the Home Depot irrigation department just to shut the damn thing up.)

This was also an issue on mid 2000 land cruisers, tundras, sequoias, ect. Luckily the after market makes a fix (remove and trick ecu). Toyota thought it was a good idea to hide them between a pig v8 and a firewall. It was theorized that the foam air filters would disintegrate and them break the computer fan like motors.

it’s the lack of code that bothers me. like look I don’t doubt the mechanic it’s broke and is causing failure of smog on the inspection. I know what a bad one sounds like but was hoping the lack of code meant it wasn’t totally fucked and would still pass inspection. Obviously not the case. If the damn things are going to break, at least make them break right and throw a light! damn..

My Passat had this same issue, but no emissions inspection = low priority.
To my knowledge, it’s silly. It just pumps extra air into the manifold on cold start to artificially reduce emissions. Seemed like a complex solution to a dumb regulation to me.
Lots of people deleted them. Marginal impact on anything, anyway.

My ZHP ate the secondary air injection valve, but luckily I replaced it before bad things could happen to the pump. Nice, easy job on an I6, it’s on the first cylinder. $80 for the valve and $5 for the gasket.
